India is one of the mineral rich countries of the world. One of the main reasons for the mineral richness of India is that rocks of almost all order from ancient to new are found here. Most of the metallic minerals of India are obtained from the rocks of Dharwad order and coal is found mainly in the rocks of Gondwana order. Four types of coal are found in India: Anthracite (best quality coal found only in Jammu and Kashmir); Bituminous (the second best quality of coal); Lignite (found in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir); Peat (this is the first stage of the conversion of wood into coal, which contains only 35 percent carbon). In this article we are giving the list of major coal fields in India which can be used as study material in preparation for various competitive exams.
