 Laterites are soil types rich in iron and aluminium ,formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are rusty-red because of iron oxides. They develop by intensive and long-lasting weathering of the underlying parent rock. Tropical weathering (laterization) is a prolonged process of chemical weathering which produces a wide variety in the thickness, grade, chemistry and ore mineralogy of the resulting soils./लेटराइट मिट्टी के प्रकार हैं जो लोहे और एल्यूमीनियम से भरपूर होते हैं, जो गर्म और गीले उष्णकटिबंधीय क्षेत्रों में बनते हैं। आयरन ऑक्साइड के कारण लगभग सभी लेटराइट जंग लगे लाल रंग के होते हैं। वे अंतर्निहित मूल चट्टान के गहन और लंबे समय तक चलने वाले अपक्षय द्वारा विकसित होते हैं। उष्णकटिबंधीय अपक्षय (लेटराइजेशन) रासायनिक अपक्षय की एक लंबी प्रक्रिया है जो परिणामी मिट्टी की मोटाई, ग्रेड, रसायन विज्ञान और अयस्क खनिज विज्ञान में व्यापक विविधता पैदा करती है।
