The Alaknanda rises at the confluence and feet of the Satopanth and Bhagirath Kharak glaciers in Uttarakhand near the border with Tibet. The headwaters of the Bhagirathi are formed at Gaumukh, at the foot of the Gangotri glacier and Khatling glaciers in the Garhwal Himalaya. These two sacred rivers join to form the Ganges (Ganga) in Devprayag.

Devprayag is a city and a famous pilgrimage center located in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is situated at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. After this confluence site, this river is known as ‘Ganga’ for the first time. Here is the temple of Shri Raghunath Ji, where Hindu pilgrims come from every corner of India. Devprayag is situated at the confluence of the rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. From here the combined stream of both the rivers is called ‘Ganga’. It is located 18 miles south-southeast from Tehri. This pilgrimage place has special significance due to the ancient Hindu temple. Due to being at the confluence, it is also named like Tirtharaj Prayag.

Devprayag is situated at an altitude of 1500 feet above sea level and is 70 km by road from the nearby city of Rishikesh. This place is considered to be one of the Panch Prayag of Uttarakhand state. Apart from this, it is said that when King Bhagirath persuaded Ganga to descend on earth, 33 crore gods and goddesses also descended from heaven with Ganga. Then he made his residence in Devprayag which is the birth place of Ganga. After the confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda, the holy river Ganga has emerged from here. It is here that for the first time this river is known as Ganga.

According to the belief in Garhwal region, Bhagirathi river is called mother-in-law and Alaknanda river is called daughter-in-law. Apart from the Sangam, the main attractions here are a Shiva temple and Raghunath temple, in which the Raghunath temple is built in the Dravidian style. Devprayag is full of natural wealth. The beauty here is unparalleled. Nearby Danda Nagraj Temple and Chandravadani Temple are also worth a visit. Devprayag is also known as ‘Sudarshan Kshetra’. There are no crows to be seen here, which is a surprise.

अलकनंदा तिब्बत के साथ सीमा के पास उत्तराखंड में सतोपंथ और भगीरथ खड़क ग्लेशियरों के संगम और पैरों पर उगता है। भागीरथी का हेडवाटर गौमुख में, गंगोत्री ग्लेशियर के तल पर और गढ़वाल हिमालय में खतलिंग ग्लेशियरों से बनता है। ये दो पवित्र नदियाँ देवप्रयाग में गंगा (गंगा) बनाने के लिए मिलती हैं।

देवप्रयाग भारत के उत्तराखण्ड राज्य में स्थित एक नगर एवं प्रसिद्ध तीर्थस्थान है। यह अलकनंदा तथा भागीरथी नदियों के संगम पर स्थित है। इसी संगम स्थल के बाद इस नदी को पहली बार ‘गंगा’ के नाम से जाना जाता है। यहाँ श्री रघुनाथ जी का मंदिर है, जहाँ हिंदू तीर्थयात्री भारत के कोने कोने से आते हैं। देवप्रयाग अलकनंदा और भागीरथी नदियों के संगम पर बसा है। यहीं से दोनों नदियों की सम्मिलित धारा ‘गंगा’ कहलाती है। यह टेहरी से १८ मील दक्षिण-दक्षिण-पूर्व दिशा में स्थित है। प्राचीन हिंदू मंदिर के कारण इस तीर्थस्थान का विशेष महत्व है। संगम पर होने के कारण तीर्थराज प्रयाग की भाँति ही इसका भी नामकरण हुआ है।

देवप्रयाग समुद्र सतह से १५०० फ़ीट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित है और निकटवर्ती शहर ऋषिकेश से सड़क मार्ग द्वारा ७० किमी० पर है। यह स्थान उत्तराखण्ड राज्य के पंच प्रयागों में से एक माना जाता है। इसके अलावा इसके बारे में कहा जाता है कि जब राजा भगीरथ ने गंगा को पृथ्वी पर उतरने को राजी कर लिया तो ३३ करोड़ देवी-देवता भी गंगा के साथ स्वर्ग से उतरे। तब उन्होंने अपना आवास देवप्रयाग में बनाया जो गंगा की जन्म भूमि है। भागीरथी और अलकनंदा के संगम के बाद यही से पवित्र नदी गंगा का उद्भव हुआ है। यहीं पहली बार यह नदी गंगा के नाम से जानी जाती है।

गढ़वाल क्षेत्र में मान्यतानुसार भगीरथी नदी को सास तथा अलकनंदा नदी को बहू कहा जाता है। यहां के मुख्य आकर्षण में संगम के अलावा एक शिव मंदिर तथा रघुनाथ मंदिर हैं जिनमें रघुनाथ मंदिर द्रविड शैली से निर्मित है। देवप्रयाग प्राकृतिक संपदा से परिपूर्ण है। यहां का सौन्दर्य अद्वितीय है। निकटवर्ती डंडा नागराज मंदिर और चंद्रवदनी मंदिर भी दर्शनीय हैं। देवप्रयाग को ‘सुदर्शन क्षेत्र’ भी कहा जाता है। यहां कौवे दिखायी नहीं देते, जो की एक आश्चर्य की बात है।
