The Nathpa Jhakri Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Sutlej River in Himachal Pradesh, India. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power production and it supplies a 1,500 MW underground power station with water. Construction on the project began in 1993 and it was complete in 2004. It is owned by SJVN Ltd.

Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Station of 1500 MW capacity is the largest hydroelectric power plant in the country.

Nathpa Jhakri Plant is designed to produce 6950.88 (6612) million units of electricity per year. But the quality management has enabled the plant to generate electricity more than the annual targets.

An MoU was signed in July, 1991 between the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh for the execution of the Nathpa Jhakri project.

Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Project is funded on the basis of debt equity ratio of 50:50.

The project is aided by the World Bank. The project was completed at a cost of Rs.8187 crore.

The Nathpa Jhakri project was commissioned in May 2004 and was officially dedicated to the nation on 28 May 2005 by the Prime Minister, Shri Manmohan Singh.

Power units of 250X6=1500 MW have been installed in the project. This project is one of the largest river valley projects in India. Here it is 8.5 meters in diameter and 27 km. A long tunnel has been built, which is the longest tunnel in India and possibly also in Asia.

नाथपा झाकरी बांध भारत के हिमाचल प्रदेश में सतलुज नदी पर बना एक ठोस गुरुत्वाकर्षण बांध है। बांध का प्राथमिक उद्देश्य जलविद्युत बिजली उत्पादन है और यह पानी के साथ 1,500 मेगावाट भूमिगत बिजली स्टेशन की आपूर्ति करता है। परियोजना पर निर्माण 1993 में शुरू हुआ और यह 2004 में पूरा हुआ। इसका स्वामित्व एसजेवीएन लिमिटेड के पास है।

नाथपा झाकड़ी प्लांट प्रति वर्ष 6950.88 (6612) मिलियन यूनिट बिजली का उत्पादन करने के लिए डिजाइन किया गया है। परंतु प्लांट को गुणवत्ता प्रबंधन ने वार्षिक लक्ष्यों से अधिक विद्युत उत्पादन करने में सक्षम बनाया है।

नाथपा झाकड़ी परियोजना के निष्पादन के लिए भारत सरकार और हिमाचल प्रदेश सरकार के बीच जुलाई,1991 में एक समझौता ज्ञापन पर हस्ताक्षर किए गए थे।

नाथपा झाकड़ी जलविद्युत परियोजना को 50:50 के ऋण इक्विटीगत अनुपात के आधार पर वित्त पोषित किया गया है।

परियोजना को विश्व बैंक से सहायता प्राप्त है। परियोजना को 8187 करोड़ रपए की लागत से पूरा किया गया था।

नाथपा झाकड़ी परियोजना को मई,2004 में कमीशन किया गया था तथा आधिकारिक तौर पर 28 मई,2005 को प्रधानमंत्री श्री मनमोहन सिंह ने इसे राष्ट्र को समर्पित किया।

नाथपा झाकड़ी जलविद्युत प्लांट से विद्युत का आबंटन उत्तर भारतीय राज्यों हरियाणा, हि.प्र., पंजाब, जम्मू एवं कश्मीर, राजस्थान, उत्तर प्रदेश, उत्तराखण्ड तथा दिल्ली व चंडीगढ़ के सभी शहरों को होता है जिससे ग्रिड इस क्षेत्र में विद्युत की कमी को दूर करने के लिए सक्षम है।
झाकड़ी जलविद्युत परियोजना हिमाचल प्रदेश के किंनौर ज़िले में सतलुज नदी पर बनाई जा रही है। इस परियोजना में ‘नाथपा झाकड़ी बाँध’ बनाया जा रहा है। परियोजना में 250X6=1500 मेगावाट की विद्युत इकाइयाँ लगाई गयी हैं। यह परियोजना भारत की सबसे बड़ी नदी घाटी परियोजनाओं में से एक है। यहाँ पर 8.5 मीटर व्यास और 27 कि.मी. लंबी एक सुरंग बनाई गयी है, जो भारत की और संभवतः एशिया की भी सबसे लंबी सुरंग है।
