Quinine, as a component of the bark of the cinchona tree, was used to treat malaria from as early as the 1600s. The bark of trees in this genus is the source of a variety of alkaloids, the most familiar of which is quinine, an antipyretic (anti-fever) agent. /सिनकोना के पेड़ की छाल के एक घटक के रूप में कुनैन का उपयोग मलेरिया के इलाज के लिए 1600 के दशक से ही किया जाता था। इस जीनस में पेड़ों की छाल विभिन्न प्रकार के अल्कलॉइड का स्रोत है, जिनमें से सबसे अधिक परिचित कुनैन है, जो एक ज्वरनाशक (बुखार-रोधी) एजेंट है।
