Lord Dalhousie was keen on annexing the kingdom of Awadh. But the task presented certain difficulties because the Nawab of Awadh had been a British ally since the Battle of Buxar and had been most obedient to the British over the years. Lord Dalhousie hit upon the idea of alleviating the plight of the people of Awadh and accusing Nawab Wajid Ali on the ground of misgovernance and annexed his state in 1856./ लॉर्ड डलहौजी अवध राज्य पर कब्ज़ा करने का इच्छुक था। लेकिन इस कार्य में कुछ कठिनाइयाँ आईं क्योंकि अवध के नवाब बक्सर की लड़ाई के बाद से ब्रिटिश सहयोगी थे और वर्षों से अंग्रेजों के प्रति सबसे अधिक आज्ञाकारी थे। लॉर्ड डलहौजी ने अवध के लोगों की दुर्दशा को कम करने और नवाब वाजिद अली पर कुशासन का आरोप लगाने का विचार किया और 1856 में उनके राज्य पर कब्जा कर लिया।
