Bhimbetka caves are located in the Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh. These rock shelters are in the foothills of the Vindhyan Mountains on the Southern edge of the central Indian plateau. Dr. V.S. Wakankar (one of the most renowed archeologists), discovered these caves in 1958. The word ‘Bhimbetka’, is derived from ‘Bhim Baitka’. These caves are named after ‘Bhima’, one of the five Pandavas of Mahabharata. Bhimbetka simply means “sitting place of Bhima”.
भीमबेटका गुफाएँ मध्य प्रदेश के रायसेन जिले में स्थित हैं। ये शैलाश्रय मध्य भारतीय पठार के दक्षिणी किनारे पर विंध्य पर्वत की तलहटी में हैं। डॉ. वी.एस. वाकणकर (सबसे प्रसिद्ध पुरातत्वविदों में से एक) ने 1958 में इन गुफाओं की खोज की थी। ‘भीमबेटका’ शब्द, ‘भीम बैठका’ से लिया गया है। इन गुफाओं का नाम महाभारत के पांच पांडवों में से एक ‘भीम’ के नाम पर रखा गया है। भीमबेटका का सीधा सा अर्थ है “भीम का बैठने का स्थान”।
