The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which lists sixteen institutes. The first IIT was established in 1951, in Kharagpur (near Kolkata) in the state of West Bengal. The second IIT to be established, IIT Bombay, was founded in 1958 in Powai, Mumbai.
