Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) is the first integrated steel plant in the public sector in India. The Hirakud Project supplies the bulk quantity of power to the Rourkela Steel Plant. The abundant availability of high quality iron ore, limestone, dolomite, manganese ore, 55 M.W, of electricity from Hirakud dam, and water supply from the River Brahmani led to the selection of Rourkela as the site for the steel plant.
The Hirakud Dam Project supplies the bulk quantity of power to the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha. The power plant will generate electricity by harnessing the energy potential of water released from the dam for the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to use it in the downstream
Hirakud Dam is a dam built on the Mahanadi river in Odisha. It is 15 km away from Sambalpur. Built in 1957 on the Mahanadi, this dam is the largest and longest dam in the world. Its total length is 25.8 km. Behind this dam is a huge reservoir which is the largest artificial lake in Asia.
This project is one of the few early projects started in India. On the left is the main dam from Lamdungri hill to Chandili hill, 4.8 km away. It has two observation towers on either side, Gandhi Minar and Nehru Minar. The shoreline of its reservoir is 639 km long. The soil, concrete and other materials used to build this dam could have made a road about eight meters wide from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Amritsar to Dibrugarh. The lake of Hirakud is the largest man-made lake in Asia. The length of this dam is 4801 meters, in which 810 crore cubic meters of water is stored. Its purpose is flood control and power generation.
This dam is the largest and longest dam in the world. Apart from Hirakud, there are two more dams in existence on the Hirakud project.

राउरकेला स्टील प्लांट (आरएसपी) भारत में सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र का पहला एकीकृत इस्पात संयंत्र है। हीराकुंड परियोजना राउरकेला इस्पात संयंत्र को भारी मात्रा में बिजली की आपूर्ति करती है। हीराकुंड बांध से उच्च गुणवत्ता वाले लौह अयस्क, चूना पत्थर, डोलोमाइट, मैंगनीज अयस्क, 55 मेगावाट बिजली की प्रचुर उपलब्धता और ब्राह्मणी नदी से पानी की आपूर्ति के कारण राउरकेला को इस्पात संयंत्र के लिए साइट के रूप में चुना गया।
हीराकुंड बांध परियोजना ओडिशा में राउरकेला स्टील प्लांट को भारी मात्रा में बिजली की आपूर्ति करती है। राउरकेला स्टील प्लांट (आरएसपी) को डाउनस्ट्रीम में उपयोग करने के लिए बांध से जारी पानी की ऊर्जा क्षमता का उपयोग करके बिजली संयंत्र बिजली उत्पन्न करेगा।
हीराकुण्ड बाँध ओडीसा में महानदी पर निर्मित एक बाँध है। यह सम्बलपुर से 15 किमी दूर है। 1957 में महानदी पर निर्मित यह बाँध संसार का सबसे बड़ा एवं लंबा बांध है। इसकी कुल लम्बाई 25.8 किमी० है। इस बाँध के पीछे विशाल जलाशय है जो एशिया का सबसे बड़ा कृत्रिम झील है।
यह परियोजना भारत में शुरू की गयी कुछ आरम्भिक परियोजनाओं में से एक है। बाईं ओर लामडूंगरी पहाड़ी से लेकर 4.8 किमी० दूर चंदीली पहाड़ी तक मुख्य बाँध है। इसके दोनों तरफ दो अवलोकन मीनार हैं, गाँधी मीनार व नेहरू मीनार। इसके जलाशय की तट रेखा 639 किमी० लम्बी है। इस बाँध को बनाने में इस्तेमाल हुए मृदा, कंक्रीट व अन्य सामग्री से कश्मीर से कन्याकुमारी तथा अमृतसर से डिब्रूगढ़ तक करीब आठ मीटर चौड़ी सड़क बनाई जा सकती थी। हीराकुण्ड की झील एशिया की सबसे बड़ी मानवनिर्मित झील है। इस बांध की लंबाई 4801मीटर है जिसमे 810 करोड़ घन मीटर जल संचित होता है। इसका उद्देश्य बाढ़ नियंत्रण एवं विद्युत उत्पादन करना है।
यह बांध विश्व का सबसे बड़ा एवं लंबा बांध है। हीराकुंड परियोजना पर हीराकुंड के अलावा दो और बांध उपस्थिति हैं।
