Apsara became the first nuclear reactor of India in 1956. It was named by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru when he likened the blue Cerenkov radiation to the beauty of the Apsaras (Indra’s court dancers). This first nuclear research reactor of India completed 50 years in August 2006. / अप्सरा 1956 में भारत का पहला परमाणु रिएक्टर बन गया। इसका नाम भारत के तत्कालीन प्रधान मंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने रखा था, जब उन्होंने नीले सेरेनकोव विकिरण की तुलना अप्सराओं (इंद्र के दरबारी नर्तक) की सुंदरता से की थी। भारत के इस पहले परमाणु अनुसंधान रिएक्टर ने अगस्त 2006 में 50 साल पूरे किए।
