Ozone layer, that is, the layer of life-protecting ozone found at the top of the stratosphere. Ozone is formed in the earth’s stratosphere and is critical to life on earth as we know it. There is compelling scientific evidence that ozone is destroyed in the stratosphere and that some human-released chemicals are speeding up the breakdown of ozone in the atmosphere. The appearance of a hole in the earth’s ozone layer over Antarctica, first detected in 1976, was so unexpected that scientists didn’t pay attention to what their instruments were telling them; they thought their instruments were malfunctioning. / ओजोन परत, यानी जीवन रक्षक ओजोन की परत समताप मंडल के शीर्ष पर पाई जाती है। ओजोन पृथ्वी के समताप मंडल में बनता है और पृथ्वी पर जीवन के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है जैसा कि हम जानते हैं। इस बात के सम्मोहक वैज्ञानिक प्रमाण हैं कि समताप मंडल में ओजोन नष्ट हो गया है और कुछ मानव-मुक्त रसायन वातावरण में ओजोन के टूटने को तेज कर रहे हैं। अंटार्कटिका के ऊपर पृथ्वी की ओजोन परत में एक छेद का दिखना, जिसका पहली बार 1976 में पता चला था, इतना अप्रत्याशित था कि वैज्ञानिकों ने इस बात पर ध्यान नहीं दिया कि उनके उपकरण उन्हें क्या बता रहे हैं; उन्हें लगा कि उनके उपकरण खराब हैं।
