Project Tiger is a tiger conservation programme launched in 1973 by the Government of India during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure. The project aims at ensuring a viable population of Bengal tigers in their natural habitats and also to protect them from extinction, and preserving areas of biological importance as a natural heritage forever represented as close as possible the diversity of ecosystems across the tiger’s distribution in the country.
Keeping in mind the declining population of tigers in India, Project Tiger was launched on this day in 1973 (April 1). Kailash Sankhla was chosen as the first director of Project Tiger during the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This species was on the verge of extinction. But thanks to this project, the number of tigers in India has increased.
The declining number of tigers had become a cause of concern for India. But Project Tiger proved to be very helpful in this. In the year 2006, there were a total of 1411 tigers in India. But that number doubled by 2018. The important thing is that the number of tigers kept increasing year after year. In the year 2010, there were a total of 1706 tigers in India. After this, the same number increased in 2014 to 2226, while in 2018 there were 2967 tigers.

भारत में बाघों की घटती आबादी को ध्यान में रखते हुए आज ही के दिन 1973 (1 अप्रैल) को प्रोजेक्ट टाइगर लॉन्च किया गया था। कैलाश सांखला को पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी के कार्यकाल के दौरान प्रोजेक्ट टाइगर के पहले निदेशक के रूप में चुना गया था। यह प्रजाति विलुप्त होने के कगार पर थी। लेकिन इस परियोजना की बदौलत भारत में बाघों की संख्या में इजाफा हुआ है।
