The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a gravity dam on the Narmada River near Navagam, Gujarat, India. It is the largest dam and part of the Narmada Valley Project, a large hydraulic engineering project involving the construction of a series of large irrigation and hydroelectric multi-purpose dams on the Narmada River. The project took form in 1979 as part of a development scheme to increase irrigation and produce hydroelectricity. It is the 30th largest dams planned on river Narmada, Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSD) is the largest structure to be built.

1.Sardar Sarovar Dam is a gravity dam built on the Narmada River near Navgam in Gujarat. These dams supply water and electricity to the four states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
2. It was the ambitious project of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose concept was tried to be embodied by Jawaharlal Nehru around the year 1960, but no concrete steps could be taken for this project.
3. Around the year 1980, with the help of the World Bank, ground work on this project was started.
4. The Narmada river forms a long gorge following the south-west Malwa plateau. The extension of this gorge extends to Gujarat where Sardar Sarovar Dam has been constructed.
5. The Narmada Bachao Andolan was also started due to the concern of displacement of people after the land acquisition for the dam.

सरदार सरोवर बांध नवगाम, गुजरात, भारत के पास नर्मदा नदी पर एक गुरुत्वाकर्षण बांध है। यह नर्मदा घाटी परियोजना का सबसे बड़ा बांध और हिस्सा है, एक बड़ी हाइड्रोलिक इंजीनियरिंग परियोजना जिसमें नर्मदा नदी पर बड़ी सिंचाई और जलविद्युत बहुउद्देश्यीय बांधों की एक श्रृंखला का निर्माण शामिल है। सिंचाई बढ़ाने और जलविद्युत उत्पादन के लिए एक विकास योजना के हिस्से के रूप में इस परियोजना ने 1979 में रूप लिया। यह नर्मदा नदी पर नियोजित 30 वां सबसे बड़ा बांध है, सरदार सरोवर बांध (एसएसडी) बनने वाली सबसे बड़ी संरचना है।

1.सरदार सरोवर बांध गुजरात के नवगाम के पास नर्मदा नदी पर बना एक गुरुत्व बांध है। यह बांध चार राज्यों गुजरात, मध्य प्रदेश, महाराष्ट्र और राजस्थान में पानी तथा बिजली की आपूर्ति करते है।
2.यह सरदार वल्लभ भाई पटेल की महत्त्वाकांक्षी परियोजना थी जिसकी संकल्पना को वर्ष 1960 के आसपास जवाहरलाल नेहरू द्वारा मूर्त रूप देने का प्रयास किया, लेकिन इस परियोजना हेतु कोई ठोस कदम नही उठाया जा सका।
3.वर्ष 1980 के आसपास विश्व बैंक की सहायता से इस परियोजना पर ज़मीनी कार्यवाही प्रारंभ की गई।
4.नर्मदा नदी दक्षिण-पश्चिम मालवा पठार के बाद एक लंबे गार्ज का निर्माण करती है। इस गार्ज का विस्तार गुजरात तक है जहाँ सरदार सरोवर बांध का निर्माण किया गया है।
5.बांध के लिये भूमि अधिग्रहण के बाद लोगों के विस्थापन की चिंता को लेकर नर्मदा बचाओ आंदोलन की भी शुरुआत हुई।
